About Jason

Born in Hong Kong, Jason Tsz-Shing Liu studied the piano, the cello and composition since a young age. He attained the FTCL Diploma for piano in 2009 and the LTCL Diploma for cello in 2011.

 

A Master graduate at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Liu majored in Collaborative Piano under the tutelage of Associate Professor Mr Hsu Wei-En, and was awarded numerous scholarships. He is currently a Faculty Accompanist at the Academy, as well as a

musicianship lecturer at the APA Junior Programme.

As Collaborative Pianist

 

Liu actively performs with vocalists and instrumentalists inside and outside the Academy, and has served as pianist in numerous graduation recitals and masterclasses. Liu is also choir pianist at Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Primary and Secondary School, and worked as rehearsal pianist with various groups including WDR Rundfunkchor Köln, accentus, Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus, Opera Hong Kong, Bel Canto Singers, Musica Viva, The Opera Society of Hong Kong, etc. He has involved in numerous opera productions including TurandotGiulio CesareAnna BolenaCavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci.

As Conductor
 

Liu is currently Assistant Conductor of The Learners Chorus under the tutelage of Mr Apollo Wong. Under his role as Chorus Master of Ponte Orchestra and Singers, he had prepared the chorus for Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem, Pärt’s Salve Regina, and worked as vocal coach in Beauty and the Beast in Concert. He was Choirmaster of the Hong Kong University Students’ Union Choir, and conducted the Choir’s performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana.

 

Liu is also conductor of Hong Kong Inter-School Choir (Junior Secondary Division), HKU Shun Hing College Schola Cantorum, and St. Paul’s College Choir, which recently captured First Place in the category of Junior Boys' Choir singing in Foreign Language in the 76th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival.

As Composer
 

Liu majored in Composition and Electronic Music in the Junior Music Programme of the HKAPA under the tutelage of Ms Poly Ng. His compositions were awarded in numerous competitions and were performed by notable groups in places including Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom, USA and Hong Kong. Recent recognitions include Honourable Mention of Japan International Choral Composition Competition 2022 (All Day I Hear the Noise of Waters), and one of the three finalists in Oper Leipzig composition competition “Wahrheiten” (The Iron House). Other recent pieces include Cantonese musical The Adventure with Tam Kung premiered by Ponte Orchestra and Good Hope School Choir, chamber piece The Vanishing Glimpse commissioned by Musicus Society, Cantonese song cycle Samson and choral works Fireworks for St. Paul’s College, Picturesque Cityscape for HKBUAS, Together We Sing Again commissioned by Hong Kong Inter-School Choral Festival and Credo for St. Paul’s Co-educational College. Some of his choral works are being published by the Chinese University of Hong Kong Chorus. He is a member of Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong.

Other experiences
 

An alumnus of the Hong Kong Children’s Choir, Liu toured extensively as a singer, and was the pianist for the Choir’s tours in 2011 and 2023. He is currently a tutor of HKCC.

Liu completed his Master in Architecture and Bachelor of Arts (Architectural Studies) at the University of Hong Kong. He was recipient of multiple prizes and scholarships during his study. He underwent his exchange semester in the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and was a chorister of Wiener Singverein during his stay.
